About Paul Gauguin

The French painter Paul Gauguin {goh-gan'}, b. June 7, 1848 , d. May 8, 1903 , was one of the leading figures in post-impressionist art of the 1880s and '90s. Both his personality and his principles of coloring and composition exerted a strong influence on modern painting.
The vogue for Gauguin's work started soon after his death. Many of his later paintings were acquired by the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin. A substantial part of his collection is displayed in the Pushkin Museum . His paintings are rarely offered for sale, their price may be as a high as $39.2 million.
