Other Works
Henri Rousseau is also known to have worked on many of his paintings for quite a considerable amount of time that produces seemingly non-extensive subjects. He has been labeled as “Le Douanier” or the tax collector by many of the art critics of the time but even with this ridicule he has managed to produce quite a number of works that along side younger avant-garde artists of the time were shown side by side in the Salon des Independants. This is also where his first serious review was made by a young artist Felix Valloton called one of his works as the alpha and omega of painting. He retired in 1893 and supplemented his meager pension by playing the violin on the streets of Paris and by making covers for a magazine. He died on September 2nd, 1910 in the Hospital Necker in Paris and was buried in the Cementiere de Bagneux with some artist friends present.
