Major Works

The Joy of Life (1905 – 1906) is considered to be one of the most significant works of Twenty Century art. It was bought by the famous art collector Dr. Albert C. Barnes. The painting, along with other Barnes collection was kept from the public for 72 years. The collection of the Barnes Foundation was finally opened to the art world again in 1993 and can be visited outside Philadelphia .

The Conversation (1909) is one of the great Matisses that are now in Russia . IN this painting, husband and wife converse but the conversation is voiceless They are ruthlessly opposed: the man—a self portrait – is dominating and upright, while the woman leans back sulkily in her chair.
