Societe des Artistes Independants

He, along with some other artists including Maximillen Luce, formed a group of independent artists called the “Societe des Artistes Independants” where he met Paul Signac who shared his views on pointillism. Both artists painted using the same technique and in 1884 Seurat began work on his masterpiece “Sunday Afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte” that took him two years to complete. After which, he moved to the Boulevard of Clichy into a more quiet studio where he lived secretly with a young model named Madeline Knobloch who gave him a son in 1890 and again shortly after his death. Madeline introduced his young family to his parents shortly after Seurat’s death in March 29, 1891. He died of meningitis leaving one of his works “The Circus” unfinished.
