Saturn Devouring One of his Sons (1820) This horrible illustration is one of the famous “black paintings” that Goya decorated in his house which hung in his dining room. The god Saturn consumed his sons for the fear of their possible take over when they grow up. The brutality of the fable stroke Goya who was opposed to the absurdity of old age.

The Third of May, 1808 (1814) A groups of Spanish rebels are executed by the French forces taking over Madrid. A chain of faceless soldiers take aim beneath the night sky. The condemned men react with mixed emotions. Goya highlighted the man in their midst who throws out his arms in a Christ-like gesture of martyrdom.
