Other Works

Egon was called to service in 1917 where he was put to work as a clerk. He was eventually sent to Venice, to work for the Imperial and Royal Commission for the Army in the field. This was more favorable to Egon for during the war food was in short supply and to be assigned to the branch of the Austrian military that supplied the comforts of their personnel was a place to be close to. Even with his working in the army, Schiele’s reputation as a prominent artist was not hampered for he was now regarded as one of the most prominent Austrian artists of the time. He was invited to exhibit his work in a government sponsored exhibition in Copenhagen and Stockholm that was aimed to improve Austria’s image with neutral Scandinavian powers. He was again invited in 1918 to be a major participant in the Sezession’s  49th exhibition with his production of a poster that was reminiscent of the Last Supper. This resulted in him And Edith moving to a grand home much to their delight which was so shortened by Edith’s sudden death from Spanish influenza that was fast sweeping across Europe at the time. Egon died on October 31st 1918 only three days after his beloved Edith.
