Biography
Born 4th of 5 children in Bradford 1937, he won a scholarship to the Bradford Grammar School at the age of eleven but his mind was already set on being an artist. He spent his time doing posters for the school magazine and the school’s debating team as an alternative to homework. He managed to persuade his parents when he was 16 that he wanted to go to art school with them giving consent when he was sixteen years of age. He went to a local art school that was followed by two years of service in hospitals rather than going to war for National Service which was mandatory for all Britons at his age due to his conscientious objection to the action of engaging in war.
